Iftikhar Jarbou'

Iftikhar Jarbou', one of Inash Al-Usra Society's embroiderers, has more than 39 years of experience in the art of Palestinian embroidery. She began working with the Society in 1988, after being introduced to it through her mother-in-law, who also worked with the Society in embroidery. Iftikhar chose to join the Society out of a desire to develop her skills and to help support her family amid the difficult economic conditions during the years of the Intifada, finding in embroidery an opportunity to work from home and a profession that preserved her dignity and gave her a steady source of income.

Iftikhar sees embroidery as more than just patterns being stitched; it is a Palestinian legacy passed down by women across generations, and it is the message that Inash Al-Usra Society works to preserve by providing work opportunities for embroiderers to reproduce this heritage using skills inherited from mothers and grandmothers. After a career spanning decades, Iftikhar continues her work today alongside her four daughters, who work with her in embroidery.
